MoD FORCED TO RECOGNISE SCOTTISH OPPOSITION TO TRIDENT
Posted on Sunday, April 15 2007

Commenting on the news that the Ministry of Defence is reportedly considering not basing Trident in Scotland, the Scottish National Party’s Defence Spokesperson Mr Angus Robertson MP said:“Dumping a new generation of weapons of mass destruction in Scotland – at a cost of up to £100 billion – is opposed by the vast majority of people, Scottish civic society, the churches, and now a majority of Scottish MPs. At the very least, this story indicates that the MoD are having to pay attention to the strength of opposition to Trident in Scotland.“It’s clear that the only way to make Scotland nuclear free is for people to vote SNP.“Research commissioned by the STUC shows that Scotland’s share of the huge capital cost of Trident is actually costing the Scottish economy over 3,000 jobs.“Trident is unpopular, unacceptable and unsustainable.“Parliamentary answers prove that the number of jobs in Scotland which rely on Trident is 1,109 – a figure which has fallen over the past two years. And in terms of the spending, that works out at a ridiculous £5 million a job. So Trident is costing Scotland thousands of jobs, as well as depriving us of money which would be better spent on improving society.”
