VOTERS TURN ON LABOUR POLICIES OVER IRAQ Posted on Saturday, November 25 2006
NEW POLL BELIVE THAT TROOPS SHOULD BE WITHDRAWNThe SNP today (Sunday) revealed new evidence that Scots are turning on the Labour Party over the war in Iraq on the eve of a potential vote on the SNP/Plaid amendment to the Queen's Speech requiring the Government to revise its Iraq strategy and present it to the House of Commons.A poll commissioned by the party and carried out by YouGov shows that a clear majority of Scots believe that:• 58 percent of Scots want our troops to be withdrawn from Iraq now• 62 percent believed that the Labour government lied when making the case for war• A majority believe that Holyrood should have the powers toorder our troops home• 68 percent want a parliamentary inquiry into the war, asproposed by the SNP• Only 5 percent of Scots think that going to war in Iraq has made Scotland safer, while 78 percent disagree• Tony Blair's war in Iraq has made voters less likely to vote for Labour, only 5 months from the Holyrood electionSpeaking as the party released the results of the poll, the SNP Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Angus Robertson MP said:“These dramatic findings indicate that the Scottish people have a full understanding of the blood soaked quagmire that Tony Blair’s labour party has led us into in Iraq. As their position deteriorates by the day there is now an overwhelming public demand to both punish those responsible for this nightmare and also to force an exit strategy from the conflict.“These figures appear on the eve of a potential commons vote where a 107 MP’s from six political parties have signed a SNP/Plaid amendment to the Humble Address demanding that the government revise its Iraq strategy and present it to the House of Commons.“If the speaker selects that amendment for division the Government could be held to account on this issue as soon as tomorrow and Parliamentary accountability over this disastrous misadventure restored. In any case, for the sake of our brave troops and the people of Iraq we should hopethat this opportunity presents itself tomorrow but whatever happens to Parliamentary accountability these dramatic poll figures indicate that the Labour Government will be held publicly accountable for the quagmire into which they have placed this country.
